![]() ![]() A similar shot is used when Vincent is in his car on his way to pick up Mia, but this shot seems to be used to intensify Vincent’s high. Butch’s storyline could be considered a traditional noir plot line therefore it makes sense that Tarantino would incorporate black and white footage into a color film. This particular scene places the cab in the foreground and a drop screen in the background projects footage of moving down a street, which is shot in black and white. This is best demonstrated in Butch’s cab ride after he wins his boxing match. Just like much of the pulp literature, the events of Pulp Fiction are at times so excessively realistic that audiences dismiss much of the movie.ĭespite the way many of the film’s characteristics reflect the pulp genre, there are also elements in the movie that reflect the noir genre. The entire movie could simply be considered a pulp novel brought to life by cinema in order to give the public a new and entertaining film. This genre of literature was printed quickly because of people’s continuous demand for new, entertaining stories this may be the same idea Tarantino had while writing the script for Pulp Fiction. ![]() Quentin Taratino pays homage to these novels, which is especially evident in the movies use of crime violence and the character’s witty dialogue, another feature of pulp fiction. The first image of Pulp Fiction is two definitions of the word “pulp.” The second definition provided is, “a magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper.” Pulp stories were popular during the 1920s and 1930s because they could be bought cheap, quickly read and contained memorable characters. I believe Tarantino incorporates elements of hyper-reality, one’s inability to clearly distinguish reality from an imitation of reality, to encourage audiences to question what exactly they perceive as they watch the film and present serious subjects, such as violence, in a humorous way. While reflecting on Pulp Fiction, one may ask if what they are experiencing is real or a fabrication intended for entertainment. Throughout the movie, audiences find themselves horrified and laughing at the same time, which is a rare reaction to much of cinema. Tarantino’s ability to construct a screenplay that includes dialogue as a way to humanize and develop characters, rather than simply advance the plot, is one of the things that make Pulp Fiction such an interesting and popular movie. The movie was released in 1994 and tends to be classified as a crime film, which is in part accurate, but the film offers viewers with much more than just story line about crime or gangsters in Los Angeles. Quentin Tarantino’s, Pulp Fiction, is frequently regarded as one of the greatest independent films of all time due to its success and impact on independent cinema. ![]()
